Learn To Identify Shapes With The 2d Domino Shapes Game

Let’s look at some simple exercises to help younger toddlers learn their 2D shapes. As you make use of this, printable your child will learn or recall five 2D shapes. Star, rectangle, rhombus or diamond, triangle, pentagon, heart.

Try this activity to see how well your child can identify the shapes before you actually start to play the game. Select a few domino pieces, the double domino shape pieces are great for this activity. Try to do these several ways, I will mention two here and allow your creative juice to flow as and discover others. I usually hold the domino up and ask my daughter what shape is on it. She would point and call out the shape. Next, I would place a few domino pieces on the table and ask her to choose a specific shape. For example, “Show me a square.” I think she loves this one much more and does her little shape guessing dance. This will help you to know the childs’ ability to identify the shapes. Learn To Match Shapes With The Domino Shape Game

Here is a simple learning exercise for younger toddlers. Have some or all the dominoes on table shapes facing up. Select anyone and place it in a clear area. Call the shape or shapes on the domino. Have your toddler repeat the shape you mentioned. Then encourage them to choose the same shape from the rest of the dominoes on the table. Printing this activity

For the best result print this activity on cardstock. That does not mean that it can’t be printed on paper. You certainly can print it on paper you can laminate the pieces if you wish for them to last really long. You don’t need to have a laminating machine I have laminated pages with my household iron.  Do be careful it’s a skill that requires careful effort. You can also use contact paper and cover the back and front of the domino pieces.

After you have printed out your set of 2D shapes domino game on cardstock. Cut out each domino piece. You are free to use it just like that, but they will surely be worth laminating.

Learn To Identify Colors Using 2D Shapes Domino Matching Game

This printable includes two sets of colors. Can you guess? Hooray!! primary color and secondary colors. For older children, you can help them identify these sets of colors but for the younger ones, it’s totally up to you. My son who is now five understands the two sets of colors and their differences so I make mention of it.

These six colors in this 2d shapes game can be used as part of your child’s development. Here’s how. For younger toddlers have them repeat both shape and color after you while matching them.  As they become more familiar with the game and concept you can go further to the groups of colors. For instance when you choose a domino mention one of the shapes and colors on the domino and allow your toddler to guess the other shape and color when needed.

For Older Children

For older children turn selected domino pieces over face down. Be sure that you have similar colors among them. For instance, so five with purple and five with yellow just to give an example. Turn over one domino, have the child turn over the next one. If it has the same shape as the domino you turned over then go ahead and match it up. If not it’s your turn again. Similar to go fish or a form of concentration.

The purpose is to help identify colors and shapes while matching them together. Also, you can ask questions like is this a primary color or a secondary color. You can also ask them what colors are combined to get that secondary color. Of course, this depends on their learning ability some children because of media already have a general knowledge of how colors are mixed. So this can make for great reinforced learning.

Another aspect that you can add for older children using this 2D shapes printable is Addition. Allow your older child to add the number of shapes on the domino before placing it down in the right spot. Of course, celebrate with our children when they get it correct.

Just for fun 2D shape domino game

As with the classic Domino game. You can simply divide the number of pieces evenly and the person with the double six starts and then keep matching those 2D shapes and colors until they are all done. The first person to use all their pieces of course is the winner.

There are lots of ways you can make use of this free 2D Shapes printable. I hope that you benefit from using it just like I have. Do let me know in the comments below how you have made use of this printable.
