Oftentimes, as we search for names for our children, we look at famous names and persons from God’s word. At times even from other famous people, we admire. This is great, we hope that in some way or the other the name will have an impact on our child’s life. I have not tested this matter, but I definitely considered names from the bible for my children, what they mean, and some of the characteristics of the person who carried these names.
While the name may have little to do with the person’s character, it gives us the ability to identify characteristics in the person that we fancy. That’s the purpose of this post.
As mentioned in my post for boys, these bible characters are far from perfect. Nevertheless, the positive impact of their example still affects our lives today.

4 Bible Character Role Models For GIRLS – My Top Picks
Role Model #1 Hadassah
This Bible role model was a beautiful Jewish girl raised by her elderly cousin Mordecai. Hadassah was raised by Mordecai after the death of her mother and father. I think we can safely say he loved her as his very own daughter. Mordecai believed and loved God, he lived to please God and taught Hadassah to do the same. They lived in Persia, and Mordecai worked as an official of the King. He was “in the know”.
King Xerxes at the time had a massive banquet and Vashti his wife held a banquet for the wives of the kingdom. Read from the bible here. The king had an idea to show his beautiful queen to everyone. Surprisingly Vashti refused and the king was wrath. His officials encouraged him not to ignore the matter and so Queen Vashti was banished. By that time Hadassah was older, and Mordecai knew she was a suitable candidate for the latest press release, “new queen needed”. We have no idea how many women entered Ms. Susa’s pageant, but Hadassah also known as Esther was crowned the winner and became Queen Esther.
So why did I choose Hadassah as a role model our girls can follow; here are a few lessons highlighted below.
A. PREPARATION –
HADASSAH LEARNT THE IMPORTANCE OF PREPARATION
As parents, this bible role model can help us raise our girls so they would be prepared. We certainly do indirectly teach preparation, those times when they prepare for school, dance, swimming, and so forth. Now focus on intentional preparation for those things related to God’s kingdom. Prepare them in the word of God, prepare them for service to God, and prepare their hearts with the word of God daily. In doing so these will take root and be active in their lives, it will also benefit in this life and as they prepare for eternity.

Hadassah had to go through twelve months of preparation before she could have been presented to King Xerxes. This preparation included special skin and beauty treatments among other things. However, her preparation didn’t start there. I want to risk saying that her life as a Jew is where her preparation began. Preparation had to be done for the Sabbath day every week. It would have required that she did several things, in order to keep God’s law of rest. Not just that, her daily life and practices taught to her by her Uncle Mordecai were obviously part of her preparation.
B. Courage and Self Sacrifice
Mordecai caught her attention when she heard of his sackcloth and ashes. Esther 4:1. Her concern caused an inquiry where she found out what was decreed. This was followed by specific instructions from her uncle regarding the matter. Modercai ended his discourse by saying to Queen Esther “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this? ” Esther 4:14
At first, she was hesitant since she was aware of the protocols involved in meeting with the king. Nevertheless, her response became, join me in prayer and fasting. Esther was fully aware of what the consequences could be if this went wrong. Her wrong response to the situation could cause a nation to die. While an unfavorable response from the King could cause her to die. When weighed, it may seem better for one life to be lost than many. So she took the risk of self-sacrifice, her words “If I perish, I perish” Esther 4:16.
It took courage to take this risk. Esther’s courage and self-sacrifice came into effect as she took wise counsel from her adult uncle and dared to break the earthly kingdom rules to save an entire nation. In all this, there was one person she knew could have taken care of her fears. So she place her life in His hand. Who exactly? God almighty of course.

Jesus died and rose again Bible Craft
How can this trait impact the lives of our girls? In our world today there is a decree against righteousness and living a life that pleases God. Serving God can be a challenge since it requires us to be “set apart”. Many of the things we practice as Christians seem odd, strange, unnecessary to those who do not share our beliefs. It takes courage to stand up for righteousness. Following Christ also requires self-sacrifice since we depend on His guidance and daily take up our cross following His will.
It is critical to teach our young ladies to stand up for righteousness. Righteousness breaks the modern world mindset, righteousness leads to eternal life, righteousness will help others see a difference in our girls’ lives and gives opportunity to share their faith with others. Fill their minds with the need to depend on God alone for the courage to live right. Show them the rewards of those who were courageous from God’s word, share with them times when you had to be courageous. Let them know they can be courageous in every situation even when you are not with them.
As you teach them to be courageous and lay God’s word as their foundation, they will benefit from these seeds you plant at the right moments in life.
Role Model #2 mary
This next role model was the beloved mother of Jesus. Engaged to Joseph, I am certain that she never knew she would have changed the history of the universe. If Mary, was here today she would say a big “WOW” Read about her story in the Gospel of Luke, as we look at how this role model can influence our daughters as they grow.
A. Purity – Mary Remained Pure
Mary was a virgin at the time the angel appeared to her to make the announcement of the Christ child. Back then, unlike now it was the expectation for children to keep themselves pure until marriage. In our world today it’s quite different, though in some nations this is still a critical rule. It was Mary’s purity that made her a candidate for God’s favor and purpose.
Is purity still important today? And how can we encourage our daughters to remain pure in a world that incites sexual immorality? We must let our daughters and sons also know that God still values purity. Very often we focus on girls alone when it comes to purity but allow me to include boys in this point. Purity applies to boys also. Let our children know that purity honors God and gives God an opportunity to use them for purposes that are suitable for only the pure. As we see with Mary, purity was part of the reason she was chosen for the extra special tasks of carrying the Christ child.
For our children, purity will also protect them from many emotional, physical, and spiritual problems. Purity brings favor and is precious for marriage. I can list so many other reasons why purity is important, but I will stop here.
Fight in prayer for your child’s purity. Be the one to talk to them about their purity, value, and worth. Build their faith in God and let them know how much this will please God. Write a declaration that they will remain pure until marriage and the person God is preparing for them will also remain pure.
Obedience – Mary Accepted the Will of God For Her Life
If an angel were to appear to you now declaring what seems like an unheard of, unbelievable plan for your life or your child’s life, what would be your response?
Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant, may it be to me as you have said.” Luke 1:38
Mary believed what the angel spoke and readily accepted God’s will. She did not say let me go and speak to Joseph or my parents. While they are important and they needed to know, she recognized God’s authority and submitted. Thank God that He is a master planner, so he had already worked out the details with Joseph and everything else that would challenge His plan.
Incredible! What lesson can we parents learn from this role model’s example and how can we encourage our daughters to be obedient to God’s will.
Want to Help Your Child Grow In Their Walk With God?
Here Are Some Things You Can Practice That Are Sure To Help. Check Them Out!
As parents, it is important to remember that our children belong to God, and His plans for them are perfect. We may have a desire to see them do great things, which is awesome we should. However, we must keep in mind that God is ultimately in charge.
I was reading the book The Anatomy of God recently The author mentioned that she was studying to be a doctor when God called her to attend theological college. This must have been news to her parents but, today her worldwide ministry provides healing to so many that no amount of medical certification could bring. If you want to read this book yourself you can, I have included it above just for you, to access click the photo. This is a great testimony of what happens when we allow our children to be obedient and follow God’s will for their lives.
As parents, it’s important to teach our daughters to obey God’s word in their daily lives. We must teach our children to practice God’s written word and listen to His word also at church and during times of family worship. Place great emphasis on God’s word let it be the foundation of your child’s life. Along with this. teach your child to memorize God’s word. As you do this when God speaks to them about His will they will be sure and obey His will for their lives.
Role Model #3 Deborah
This bible role model spent endless hours listening and giving counsel to the people of Israel. A judge and prophetess God raised her up in response to Israel’s cry for deliverance. It was not the norm for this role model to lead in such a capacity during those times, after all, she was a woman. Women were subject to their husbands, homemakers, and served their families, however, God had given Deborah great wisdom and favor and many came to her for counsel. Problem-solving became her daily tasks and because people saw changes in their lives as a result of her counsel, they kept coming to her tree known as the “Palm of Deborah” Judges 4:5
So what does Deborah offer that we can utilize to help our girls grow in their walk with God.
A. Leadership – Deborah Became a Leader
Deborah obviously spent time learning to hear God’s voice and with this ability, she was able to be the recipient of precise instructions from God for the people she counseled. This made her a great leader in the eyes of the Israelites. Her wisdom and confidence in what God spoke to her built a level of trust among the people that lead to her graciously becoming a leader in their eyes. To the people around her, she was trustworthy, brave, ambitious, intelligent, and probably more.
Through Deborah God declared a win for the Israelites from the oppression of opposition army commander Sisera. I suspect Barak wasn’t totally convinced and wanted Deborah’s company as a leader, maybe to intercede during the battle. This was another great opportunity to show her leadership and speak what God had now said. “Barak, you are not going to get credit for this, a woman will.” Judges 4:9 Deborah’s word came to pass and there was singing
How can we help our daughters to be leaders? As you teach them God’s word, show them how God used different persons young and old to be leaders for Him. As a parent set the right example of leadership for them to follow. You can give your daughters simple tasks that will develop leadership and have them give account for these tasks. Explain to them the importance of doing tasks well. Teach older siblings about setting the right example for younger siblings to follow.
Encourage your daughters to do what is right at all times, even when others are doing the wrong thing. Let them know that it is ok not to be like everyone else. Stress the importance of being different for God and standing up for what is right, giving them the opportunity to lead. Leadership is not always a popular position and this is also an important point to highlight. Remind your daughters that their goals should be to please God and not people.
Here are some important things children need to know about God’s love in this post.
Be sure to check it out when you are through with this one.
B. Confidence
Deborah was confident in her relationship with God. She learned of His power and believed in His ability to make a difference. Her confidence helped as she served the people of Israel. This role model was also confident that God wanted to use her, and that gave her the ability and favor to operate outside of the common practices for women of those days. She willingly follows God’s instructions and confidently leads the people to victory. As a result, there was peace in the land for forty years. Judges 5:31
What example does this role model provide for our girls? As we teach our girls about God and develop their relationship with God, take time to explain to them from God’s word His great plans for them Jeremiah 29:11. Encourage them to be confident in God’s word, His promises, and what He says He can and will do. Look for opportunities to thank God whenever there are answers to prayer to build their faith and confidence. Proclaim aloud your confidence in God who created everything.
It’s important to let them know that everyone does not place their confidence in God, but God will use them to help others and bring them to Him when we walk in Him with confidence. Encourage them to be bold and let them know they don’t have to do what everyone is doing because God has a special plan and purpose for their lives. Lookout with expectation for times when God will use them to do great things.
Role Model # The Shunnamite Woman
This next role model is one of my favorite women in the bible. She is not mentioned by name but her story is found in 2 Kings 4:8 – 36. She was from a town called Shunem, hence the name, Shunamite woman. This role model and her husband were wealthy and seemed to have the best life had to offer. Elisha the Prophet of the day would visit Shunem, and one day met this woman. The prophet was invited to have a meal with herself and her husband. After this encounter, Elisha joins them as often as he was in town. Now let’s look at some great characteristics from this role model that our girls can follow.
A. Hospitality –
The Shunammite Woman had the gift of Hospitality
Elisha continued to visit the couple. We are not told how much time passed but, she said to her husband, “I perceive that this man is a man of God”. She went on to encourage her husband to set up a room for the man of God so he could rest, sleep, pray and stay as long he wanted to while in town. In the room, she suggested items that she knew would be useful for Elisha’s ministry. As a result of what God had blessed her and her husband with this role model showed kindness to God’s servant Elisha.
For our girls, this is a great expression of the gift of hospitality. You may not know whether your daughter has this spiritual gift, however, many women grow up with a natural ability to accommodate others. So how can this role model help your beautiful heritage? Encourage your daughter to give their best from whatever they have. Inspire them to think of ways that they can help others around them feel comfortable, accepted and seek to help others reach their goals in life.
Even though you may not have an abundance like the Shunamite woman had that allowed her to build a whole room for the purpose of hospitality. When persons visit your home, look for simple ways you can encourage your child to help them feel comfortable. As you do this, they will begin to exercise those gifts and make way for God to bless them with even more, just as He did with this role model. Also, look for other spiritual gifts your child may have and ask God for the grace to nurture those gifts.

Faith
Although seemingly content, the Shunamite woman had everything but children. She seemed to have accepted this and learned to live with the matter. She never saw it coming, how her life would change forever because of her hospitality to Elisha. His servant recognized the absence of a child and Elisha was enlightened. He called the Shunamite woman and informed her of the joy to come. Her first reaction was disbelief but, she saw the fruit of Elisha’s words not long after. She experienced God’s power to do what seems impossible.
The boy grew and must have brought great joy to that household. However, there was no preparation, for his sudden death. What is amazing is the immediate reaction to the situation. In faith, she took the boy up to Elisha’s bed, laid him down and closed the door. Then she went on her way to find the man of God. Her faith prompting the response, “It is well! “
As a result of her faith, she embraces her precious son alive once again. As she poured her heart out to Elisha, God answered her prayers because faith went before her. She recognized that the same God who Elisha prayed to for this child could help her again. This had to be faith!
So what can we teach our daughters about faith from this role model? As they grow always remind them of times God answered your prayer or their prayer. As they are reminded of God’s power in every situation their faith will increase giving God the ability to respond to them in even more difficult situations. It’s also important to teach them the correct way to respond to difficulties. The Shunamite woman’s response was “it is well” not that it was, but I believe it was the response of faith, and it mattered to God. This will take a bit more effort since they will be looking at you to see how you live this out. As you use the example of this Shunamite woman, pair it with your response to situations so they can also learn from your example of faith.
So these are my top four Bible characters that I think are wonderful role models for our girls to learn from. Let me know your top four do mention them in the comments below.
