David – 3 Powerful Life Lessons For Boys

David – 3 Powerful Life Lessons For Boys

Hi Friend! Let’s look at David an amazing Bible Character that parents can use to inspire our young boys.  Fondly called the shepherd boy, David the youngest of 8 sons of Jesse. David grew up in the town of Bethlehem and he is one of the most famous men in the Bible. Most know for the Epic victory over Goliath. This David can be a great source of inspiration for our young boys.   As I mentioned in my other post in this series, this post does not focus on the negative aspects of these Bible heroes’ lives. We can recall their errors, but what is greater, is the vital lessons we can take away from their lives.  The objective is to use the positive characteristics to assist in propelling our male heritage in their relationship with our Heavenly Father.

David A Great Bible Hero Life Lessons For Boys

David was known for playing the harp skillfully. He was anointed by Samuel to serve as the next King of Israel as a youth. Samuel visited Bethelem and invited the family to a ceremony. It’s amazing to note that everyone but David was present. He remained in the field tending sheep, and might I add not necessarily by choice. It was after all the other sons failed to make the cut that David was sent for.  Samuel didn’t really disclose to the family why he anointed David, but for sure Samuel’s visit would have had the town talking. Furthermore, David’s parents would have realized that something special was going on in their son’s life.

On that note here are some life lessons we can learn from David that we can use as an example for our boys to live by.

Life Lesson # 1 Worship – David Loved To Worship God

David loved to worship God. He enjoyed God’s presence and realized it was exactly what he needed to live a victorious life. His constant worship kept Him in God’s presence. It was God’s presence in David’s life that drove out tormenting Spirits that bothered King Saul as he played the harp. 1 Samuel 16: 14 – 23. It was not just playing for Him obviously, it was worship. David had a beautiful understanding that worshipping God was central to his life.  When David sang and played, he was playing only for God. Others may have been listening, others may have been encouraged, others may have been delivered, but God was glorified.

Application For Our Boys From David’s life of worship

How important a lesson: Can you imagine what would happen when we nurture our young boys in a way that they understand that everything that they do is for God’s glory. When it comes to worshipping, singing, and dancing, it glorifies God.

  1. Teach your son to worship God alone. Start from as early as possible and teach them to filter out music that does not bring glory to God. Make it known to your young male heritage what worship involves and who it belongs to, so others can be blessed by their life and testimony just as with David.
  2. Teach your sons to guard what enters their minds and heart. Evaluate the content of television shows, books, and so forth, and take the time to teach them what is beneficial and what is not.  Use moments of their error to ask what would bring God glory as you try to raise them to live a life of worship. Do keep in that our boys are not perfect and we should not expect perfection from them. Operate with grace as you allow God to mold their lives. When we do our part God will do His part.

Life Lesson # 2 Fearlessness – David feared nothing but God

Who is that Giant? I’ll fight him! He is certainly not stronger than the God who gives me the strength to protect my sheep from bears and predators. In today’s world, onlookers may grab their phones to capture the moment and it would spread like wildfire on social media. But David captured the essence of God’s ability to do anything and this made him fearless. David trusted God and he understood that God Almighty is the God of everything. In dark, moonlit pastures and sun-filled green valleys, David learns to be brave.  He learned to depend on God for protection and as a result, he became the greatest, bravest warrior in the Bible.

Application For Our Boys From David’s Fearlessness

  1. Teach them to know that God is greater than their fears. In life, our male children will go through different situations. Some may be “giant”.  Use David’s example to show your heritage that, God is greater than any fears they may face. David was confident that God was always with Him. Encourage them by showing them in God’s word that God promises that He is always with you. Hebrews 13:5  Fearlessly facing each giant fear with God’s help is a great lesson we can teach from David. Others may even look down on them, but let every circumstance become an opportunity to teach them to trust God and depend on Him and be fearless because God is always with them.
  2. Let your sons know that God can give them victory in every situation. Emphasize that it was God that gave David the victory and God can do the same for them.  As your male child learns to trusts God with different challenges he will become an overcomer of any situation with God’s help.

Life Lesson # 3 Love For God – David loved God

David’s love for God was so abundant that God called Him a man after His heart, 1 Samuel 13:14. Wow, how would you want God to describe your son? It was David’s love for God that helped him to pen such beautiful Psalms that we sing today. It was David’s love for God that proved his respect for God’s appointed leader Saul even when others thought David was wasting time respecting Saul. It was David’s love for God that assisted him in being the Father that God wanted Him to be to his son Solomon. David knew the Heavenly Father’s Love. David used his love for God to love others.

Application For Our Boys From David’s love for God

How can David’s love for God be a life lesson for our boys? Firstly, they need to know that the love of the Heavenly Father exceeds even the love that we can offer to them as parents. More importantly, God wants them to love Him back.

1. Encourage your boys to love God. Encourage your male heritage to express their love for God. Make use of David’s example to help them write simple songs about their love for God.

2. Encourage your boys to serve others. A great way for our boys to show their love for God is through service to others. David served as King and he demonstrated God’s love as part of His kingdom’s purpose.

3. Teach your son to respect those in authority. David also showed God’s love by his respect for authority, that was King Saul. Even, after Saul tried to do wrong to David he still respected him, simply because of his love and respect for God. Teach children to respect and honor those in authority in the church and generally, so they can be blessed.
